Político, historiador y poeta inglés. Mientras ejercía su cátedra en la Universidad de Cambridge, Macaulay publicó el primero de sus ensayos, sobre
John Milton (1825), con el que alcanzó la fama en forma casi inmediata. Después de ingresar al parlamento en 1830, cobró renombre como un destacado orador. A partir de 1834 trabajó en el Consejo Supremo de India, apoyó la igualdad de europeos e indios ante la
ley, e inauguró un sistema nacional de educación. A su regreso a Inglaterra en 1838, volvió a ingresar al parlamento. Publicó
Lays of Ancient Rome [Trovas de la Roma antigua] (1842) y
Ensayos de crítica e historia (1843) antes de retirarse de la vida pública y de empezar su magnífica
Historia de Inglaterra, 5 vol. (1849–61), que cubre el período 1688–1702, estableciendo una interpretación
whig (
liberal) de la historia inglesa que influiría en generaciones posteriores.
